"Any reasonably capable youth can readily master all of the technical problems in existence in a few short months,
but it requires many a long and weary year to learn to see."

-Birge Harrison

After cast drawing the next step at many ateliers is cast painting. Cast painting teaches the student how to manage the various technical aspects of oil painting. At the same time, Sight-Size cast painting also continues the student's eye training.

Below are a set of photos taken at different stages of a typical cast painting. For the complete version please purchase a copy of Cast Painting Using the Sight-Size Approach.

Step 1a. Lay in the main shapes, beginning with the darks which in this case was the background.

Step 1b. Continue covering the canvas, proceeding from dark to light. Once covered, the lay-in is finished.

Step 2. Refine the shadow shapes and values.
Keep all edges blurred.

Step 3. Halftones and lights added but the edges are still somewhat blurred. Refine the drawing.
Step 4. Adjust the edges to the chosen focus point.
The painting is completed.
